The website, Latino Review, has received word that the Wachowskis have begun the writing process, with treatments and outlines already turned in to the studio. There is no word on who will direct the new films, but it’s likely that the Wachowski’s will, once again, sit behind the camera.
When is the Matrix coming back?
Word is that Warner Brothers wants to have a surefire franchise on the big screen by 2017.
Why is the Matrix coming back?
Disney has Star Wars coming in 2015, and a new film every year or two thereafter, plus all of those Marvel, Pixar, and traditional Disney animation and motion pictures. Fox has three more Avatar films coming, with the first one potentially releasing in December 2016.
What will the story be about?
Nobody knows at this point. Mr. Anderson could be back, as could Agent Smith. The report said one of the early outlines was about the birth of the Matrix, and some of the suits would like to explore that early world but it’s way too early and the story is still very fluid (thus, subject to change). Matrix fans will note that this was territory already covered by the Animatrix, but the source of this news said the animated stories will have no effect on the live-action world of The Matrix. Basically, this means that Warner considers the only film canon to be the three films in the Matrix Trilogy.
Latino Review expects there to be many denials from Warner Brothers until they finally say “it’s happening.” My guess is that it’s actually happening. Expect a new Matrix film on the big screen in 2017.
